“The Power of Free”
By Jennifer Grimpe
Free is a funny word. If you were to look it up the in the
dictionary, it would probably say something like “ a gift
or without obligation”.
Having worked in the Internet industry for several years and
after attending many trade-shows, I was surprised at how many
people just came to the shows that were there for a lack of
anything better to do. After all admission was free and you
could bring home enough drink coozies to outfit a frat house.
People cannot resist the word “free”.
Enter the Internet. Where else can you get free product samples
, music, e-magazines, whatever floats your boat at 3 O’clock in
the morning? All you need to do is just fill out an online form
with your name, your email address and other demographics that
were once very costly companies to obtain.
With the rise of freebies on the Internet, it’s not surprising
that there are chat rooms, clubs, bulletin boards and web sites
dedicated to those on the never-ending quest for freebies! Do you
remember when picking out cereal depended on the prize inside?
These resources can tell you which boxes have the good stuff,
and which ones to pass up.
A quote from a chat participant on Yahoo message boards,
“I’m addicted to this stuff, and I get something new almost
everyday”.
Speaking of which, I think I hear the mailman…
